4WD Wheels & Tyres: All-Terrain vs Mud-Terrain & Sizing
The right wheel and tyre package transforms how a 4WD or ute drives, grips and lasts — and the wrong one costs you in tyre wear, fuel, noise and clearance headaches. Whether you're touring, working or building for the tracks, matching the tyre type, size and wheel to your vehicle (and to any lift you're running) is what makes the setup work.
At Payload Performance, wheel and tyre packages are quoted as a Supplied & Fitted price, with fitting and balancing at our Caboolture workshop included. Here's how to choose the right combination.
All-terrain vs mud-terrain vs hybrid
Tyre choice is the single biggest decision, and it comes down to how you split your driving between blacktop and dirt.
All-terrain (A/T)
The all-rounder. A/T tyres are quiet, comfortable and long-wearing on the highway while still handling gravel, sand and moderate off-road work. Ideal for daily drivers, tourers and most work utes. Think Nitto Trail Grappler's touring cousins, the Maxxis Razr AT811, Yokohama Geolandar X-AT, Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T and BF Goodrich KO3.
Mud-terrain (M/T)
Maximum off-road grip. Aggressive, chunky tread clears mud and bites in rocks and ruts — at the cost of more road noise and slightly faster wear. Best for builds that spend serious time off the beaten track. Options like the Nitto Trail Grappler, Maxxis Razr MT772, Yokohama Geolandar M/T, Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T and BF Goodrich KM3 live here.
Hybrid / rugged-terrain (R/T)
The middle ground — more aggressive and capable than an A/T, quieter and more civilised than a full M/T. The Nitto Ridge Grappler is the standout example. A great pick if you want serious looks and off-road ability without living with M/T noise every day.
Understanding tyre sizing
Tyre sizes look cryptic but break down simply. Take LT265/70R17:
- LT — Light Truck construction: stronger sidewalls built for load and rough terrain (what you want on a 4WD or ute).
- 265 — tread width in millimetres.
- 70 — aspect ratio: sidewall height as a percentage of width.
- R17 — radial construction on a 17-inch wheel.
You'll also see sizes like 33X12.5R17 — that's the imperial way of describing a tyre roughly 33 inches tall and 12.5 inches wide on a 17" wheel. Bigger isn't automatically better: going too tall without the clearance (or a lift) causes rubbing, and it changes your effective gearing and speedo accuracy.
Don't overlook load rating
Every tyre carries a load index (the number after the size, e.g. 121Q). For a vehicle that carries weight or tows, the load rating isn't a detail — it's a safety spec. Fitting a tyre that isn't rated for your loaded weight is a real risk, and it matters even more on a vehicle with a GVM upgrade, where the tyres need to support the higher rating. We match tyres to how your vehicle is actually loaded.
Choosing the right wheel
Wheels are about more than looks. Diameter, width and offset all affect fitment, clearance and how the tyre sits under the guard. The wrong offset can foul suspension or bodywork, or push the tyre out where it rubs. Wheel construction matters too — a quality alloy or a proper beadlock-style wheel earns its keep off-road.
We supply leading wheel brands to suit everything from subtle to full-send builds:
- Method Race Wheels — motorsport-bred strength and clean styling.
- KMC — huge range of proven off-road designs.
- Fuel — bold, aggressive looks for standout builds.

Matching wheels and tyres to your build
The best results come from thinking about wheels, tyres and suspension together. A lift kit unlocks the clearance for a taller, more capable tyre; the wheel offset makes sure that tyre clears everything at full lock and full flex; and the load rating keeps it all safe when you're loaded. Get one wrong and the others suffer — which is why it pays to plan the package as a whole.
Why supplied & fitted is the smarter buy
A tyre is only as good as its fit. Correct mounting, balancing and torqueing — and honest advice on what actually clears your vehicle — make the difference between a package that drives beautifully and one that rubs, vibrates or wears out early. Our Supplied & Fitted pricing includes professional fitting and balancing at our Caboolture workshop in the one price, so your new setup rolls out ready to go.
